Double Mattress Size - UK & Ireland

As for the standard size of a double mattress in the United Kingdom, this tends to measure 53 inches x 74 inches (135 cm x 190 cm).

Be aware, that this measurement is not entirely standardised for double mattresses. The size of a double mattress may vary ever so slightly between manufacturers.

This is because, in the UK and Ireland, manufacturers are permitted a tolerance of +/- 2 cm of the measurements that are stated.

Overall though, this won’t affect the functionality of your double mattress with your bed frame. If you’re unsure about a mattress size, it’s always best to ask the manufacturer to clarify what it is.

European Double Mattress Sizes

Double bed sizes can vary between European countries. We’ll outline a few common double sizes used in a selection of countries throughout Europe.

France uses a variety of double bed sizes. Some of the most common sizes are 140 cm x 190 cm, 160 cm x 200 cm and 180 cm x 200 cm.

Italy, on the other hand, refers to double beds as square beds. They classify their bed sizes by using the term “Piazza” (one place). A single mattress is one place, whereas a double mattress is one and a half places. The standard size for a double mattress in Italy is 120 cm x 190 cm or 120 cm x 200 cm.

Meanwhile, the most common double bed size for countries in Northern Europe such as Poland, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden is 180 cm x 200 cm. There may be some slight variations between Northern European countries, however, this is the most standard measurement.

In Spain, double beds are referred to as “cama de matrimonio” (marital bed). The most common size for a double mattress (or marital mattress) in Spain is 135 cm x 190 cm.
